Someone apparently found the hidden ad for Guinness, titled “Good things come to those who wait.” Reportedly the most expensive tv ad ever made (at a whopping 10 million pounds), the ad features an elaborate dominos rally set up throughout a quaint Argentinian town. They make it a point to say that they used no special effects to create the spot. Does that make it a better ad, does it sell more beer? I have to say I’m impressed (and again, a little jealous of the ad makers who get to play with all these fun toys on someone else’s dime), but beyond endearing the brand to the consumer, I’m not sure it says anything to make people buy more beer.
Directed by Nicolai Fugslig, who also directed the infamous Sony Bravia “Balls” commercial, the spot is as lighthearted and fun as you’d expect. They make no secret that they borrowed the concept from Honda’s “Cog” ad, but I am also reminded of an ad I saw a while ago for Orange France in which all the happy mischievious residents of the world hand paint all manner of items with black paint, and then turn them to the sky to trick the mystified astronauts in the space station into wondering where Earth went.
I haven’t seen a walkthrough of the puzzles solved to find the ad yet, but I’d be interested to see how difficult they made it to find their advertising. Now there’s a new contest, called La Fiesta de Toppling, where the supposed mayor of this little town presents a series of puzzles to be solved in order to win a solid gold domino. Any takers?
